The new National Citizen Committee made its debut with Nasir Uddin Patwari as the convener and Akhtar Hossain as the member secretary in a rally at the Central Shaheed Minar on Sunday afternoon. Nasir announced this committee of 55 members at 5:30 pm.
Samantha Sharmin was appointed as spokesperson of the committee and 52 others were appointed as members.
The primary objectives of the committee are:
1. Protecting the democratic aspirations of the people through student uprisings.
2. Taking measures to ensure justice for the brutal killings committed against the students.
3. To establish cooperation and accountability with the interim government in urgent reforms and restructuring of the state.
4. Bringing people together through various social, cultural and political initiatives.
5. Uniting leaders from all levels of society to build resistance against fascist forces.
6. Organizing thematic dialogues on policy making in the public interest.
7. To take political action in formulating and implementing necessary policy proposals aimed at restructuring state institutions.
The National Citizens Committee said in a press release that the movement against the fascist regime was formed with the leadership of the anti-discrimination student movement and the participation of the people of the country. The main goal of this movement is the long-term struggle for the abolition of the fascist system and a new political settlement.
This new political group will work to rebuild Bangladesh through coordination with the government formed on August 8 and a commitment to contribute to public interest policies. Prosecution of mass murderers, restructuring of state institutions and sensitivity to principles of public interest are essential conditions for a new political settlement.
The National Citizens Committee will soon discuss with the social, cultural and religious leaders who participated in the student uprising at all metropolitan, district and upazila levels of the country.
